Our lab elucidates design principles for engineering multicellular structures and patterns. Uncovering how cells assemble into multicellular structures is a fundamental challenge in cell and developmental biology with direct implications for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. We are developing strategies to engineer microenvironments that promote desired behaviors in individual human cells and their assembly into mature multicellular structures. This work is complemented by a parallel effort to develop predictive models of multicellular organization in the model organism C. elegans. Insights from these complementary multicellular systems provide a foundation for predictive engineering of living tissues.
